Yellow Bird Cafe: A Hammond Favorite Since 2002

Owned and operated by Elvia Bernal and her husband Juan Bernal, Yellow Bird Cafe has been a beloved part of Hammond for more than two decades.

Serving a mix of Mexican, Cuban, and American cuisine with a focus on breakfast, Yellow Bird first opened in early 2002. Originally started by Elvia’s nephews, the restaurant quickly became a family effort when Elvia and Juan, who were living in Mobile, Alabama at the time, received a call asking for help. After stepping in to run the restaurant, it did not take long for Elvia to make it her own.

Located on the corner of Cherry and Charles since day one, Yellow Bird has grown into one of the most loved breakfast spots in Tangipahoa Parish. While the food keeps people coming back, it is Elvia herself who has made the biggest impression. She knows her customers, remembers their orders, and creates a space that feels welcoming and familiar.

The menu has always centered around breakfast favorites, but over the years, Elvia expanded it to reflect both her Mexican roots and Juan’s Cuban heritage. Her house-made chorizo, featured in dishes like molletes, Mexican lasagna, and the popular Mexican Breakfast, is a standout and her personal favorite. Juan’s pick is the Cuban sandwich, a staple on the lunch menu.

A crowd favorite, the Mexican Breakfast comes with fresh tortillas, chorizo, eggs cooked your way, black beans, salsa, and pico de gallo. For those with a sweet tooth, the waffles made with a sweet potato batter are just as memorable.

Running a restaurant is no easy task, and Elvia is the first to admit it becomes more challenging with time. Still, she is not slowing down. She runs her kitchen with purpose, pride, and high standards, always expecting great food and great service.

Beyond the food, Elvia’s impact on the community runs deep. Over the years, she has built lasting relationships with customers who return time and time again, even after moving away. One story often shared is of a local resident battling cancer who lived nearby. Elvia quietly made sure he had meals simply because she cared. That kind of generosity is part of what makes Yellow Bird more than just a restaurant.

The cafe has also been a family legacy. Elvia’s daughters grew up working there, and now her granddaughter has followed in their footsteps while pursuing a future as a pharmacy technician.

Yellow Bird has been recognized as Best Breakfast in Tangipahoa Parish nearly every year since 2004, with only a few interruptions, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is an accomplishment Elvia takes great pride in and one that reflects the loyalty of her customers.

On weekends, the restaurant is often packed, so arriving early is recommended. Yellow Bird closes daily at 1 PM and draws a wide mix of regulars, from families and church groups to college students and longtime locals.

For Elvia, Yellow Bird is more than a business. It is home.
