Modified A Beauty Bar: From Solo Start to Full Service Salon
Owned by Callie Perk, Modified A Beauty Bar recently celebrated its one-year anniversary this January. For Callie, reaching this milestone is both exciting and meaningful as she reflects on how far the business has come.
Modified began as a solo venture in Ponchatoula following cosmetology school. At the time, Callie was navigating the challenges of building a business on her own, working to find the right space and establish her foundation. When the opportunity arose to rent her current location in Hammond, it offered something even more valuable. It brought her back to her hometown.
With a strong desire to be her own boss and build a future on her own terms, Callie took the leap. What started as a one-person operation has grown into a full-service salon that continues to expand. She credits that growth to her work ethic and her willingness to take on challenges.
Running the business has also pushed Callie outside of her comfort zone in the best way. It has allowed her to meet new people, build relationships, and better understand the individuality of each client she serves.
Being located in Downtown Hammond has played an important role in that experience. Callie values the connections she has made with fellow business owners and the sense of community that comes with being part of the district.
At the core of Modified is a focus on enhancing natural beauty. Callie believes every person already has inherent worth, and that small adjustments can provide a meaningful boost in confidence. That philosophy extends throughout the salon. Services are collaborative, with stylists supporting one another and sharing clients without competition. Callie specializes in lash extensions, brows, and waxing, while other team members focus on hair services. Together, they offer a wide range of options for men, women, and children.
The space itself reflects that same level of care. Modified is a large, thoughtfully designed salon with natural light, a welcoming seating area, and room for multiple stylists to work comfortably. One of its most distinctive features is a large mural by Rider Matthews. Originally located on the exterior of Mariner's Inn, the piece was relocated to the salon after the restaurant closed earlier this year.
The mural carries personal meaning for Callie. It depicts Mariner’s in its earlier years as a bicycle shop, and in the lower corner, it includes her father, a longtime member of the downtown community. Though he has passed, his presence in the mural serves as a reminder of the support and love that helped shape her journey. Now displayed in the salon, the piece reflects a deeper message about community, connection, and doing things for one another.
Modified A Beauty Bar offers a wide range of services including waxing, eyebrow laminations, and facial threading, along with haircuts, color, Brazilian blowouts, keratin treatments, facials, dermaplaning, and perms. Callie hopes to expand offerings in the future to include nail services.
Her message to clients is simple. Do not be intimidated. Come in, have a conversation, and work with the team to find services that fit your goals and your budget. Everyone deserves to feel confident.
Above all, Callie is proud of the team she has built. She describes herself as surrounded by incredibly talented individuals who contribute to the welcoming and collaborative environment that defines Modified.
