Under the supervision of the DDD Executive Director, the Manager of the Hammond Farmers & Artisans Market is responsible for overseeing all duties and tasks related to the market’s operation. Duties include, but are not limited to, on-site market operations, vendor coordination, communication/ advertising, and lead overall administration of the market. This position requires local travel (reimbursable) and work every Saturday from 7AM to 1PM. 

This position is 25 hours a week for $17 an hour. Fridays and Saturdays are required.

PRIMARY DUTIES

Administration

  • Enforce established Market Official Rules and Regulations for current and future vendors to ensure the market’s integrity.   

  • Accurately collect and record market revenues, and coordinate with DDD Administrative Assistant for weekly deposits. 

  • Manage token economy for SNAP and SNAP match transactions including but not limited to preparing change bags, reimbursement invoices, and transaction reconciliation. 

  • Complete all financial reporting requirements as applicable. 

  • Report appropriate tax data to local and state agencies.

  • Develop monthly market program and music schedule. 

  • Network with Louisiana food system organizations and research available grant opportunities to support market initiatives.

On-site Market Operations

  • Prepare site for the market including, but not limited to, coordinating closures and reservations with City Departments, deploying traffic cones and barricades, parking closures, street closures, trash collection, restroom supply checks, and tent & table set up.  

  • Maintain all market equipment, including but not limited to tents, tables, chairs, and carts, and ensure equipment is properly stowed in storage closet. 

  • Ensure proper vendor set-up and compliance with loading zones.

Vendor Coordination

  • Schedule weekly communication to vendors for market attendance and prepare weekly line-up and map with vendor placements.

  • Facilitate new vendor application intake and conduct new vendor interviews, including business registration processes and on-site farm tours as required.  

  • Maintain active vendor database to ensure vendor compliance with guidelines.

  • Inform the DDD Executive Director of any known or alleged violations of the guidelines and issue violations accordingly. 

  • Lead vendor recruitment efforts to fill product gaps in current vendor composition. 

  • Schedule and facilitate market committee meetings and/or market update meetings monthly.

Communication/ Advertising

  • Lead advertising campaign creation and social media development & management.

  • Execute thorough distribution strategy including preparation of press releases, blog posts, graphics, photos, videos, website updates, newsletter creation, social media scheduling, advertisements (print and digital), and promotional materials. 

  • Follow established branding guidelines including logo deployment and brand identity.

  • Maintain vendor and customer contact database.  

  • Organize, maintain, and take photos for the market’s photo library.

  • Proofread, copy edit, and design organizational documents and presentations.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma required. 

  • Agriculture, business, horticulture, and/or public health training preferred. 

  • Safe food handling certification preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Professional social media management experience required.

  • Customer service experience required.  

  • Event planning experience required. 

  • Experience in the fields of agriculture, business, horticulture, public health, and/or communications is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Employee is required to work outdoors in the heat, cold, and rain. The market operates rain or shine, and is only cancelled for severe weather or in the event of a City of Hammond closure. Employee must be able to lift 50 pounds, move heavy equipment, and stand for extended hours. 

COMPETENCIES

Employee must be able to operate basic office equipment, office computer, and other specialty equipment needed for the position. Intermediate knowledge of the following applications are preferred: Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), Google Suite, Canva, and Mailchimp (or similar email marketing software). A general aptitude to learn new software programs is expected. 

Employee must have strong verbal and written communication skills. Employee must be able to communicate clearly with vendors and the general public to provide clear, concise, and accurate information. Employee is expected to work independently and proactively. Employee must demonstrate excellent organizational and time management skills, and be able to lead team initiatives and relationship building. 

It is preferred that the employee is familiar with safe food handling practices, seasonality of local food in the Southeast region, basic agricultural practices, business start-up process, and current events/ issues impacting farming, local foods, and farmers markets.
