shadows of power by dr. brown
Dr. Kevin W. Brown, educator, sociologist, jazz saxophonist, and nationally recognized speaker, announces the release of his groundbreaking new book, Shadows of Power: One Gender Rose. One Lost Its Way. A Zero-Sum Reckoning for Us All.
In this bold and timely work, Dr. Brown brings to light the often-hidden women who shaped modern intellectual life and pushed humanity forward—figures too frequently omitted from mainstream history. He celebrates transformative women such as Elisabeth Montagu, leader of the Bluestocking Society; trailblazing feminist philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft; and generations of women whose intellectual, literary, and political labor reshaped Western civilization. These women challenged early patriarchal structures, stood against misogyny, and created spaces for rigorous thought and gender equity long before the world was ready to hear them.
The book tackles an urgent modern crisis: the escalating struggles facing boys and men.
Dr. Brown examines sobering trends:
• Men represent nearly 85% of suicide deaths, a mental health emergency demanding national attention.
• Women now earn 60% of college degrees, while men hover around 37–40% enrollment, signaling an educational and economic divide with long-term social consequences.
• Men are increasingly reporting loneliness, disengagement, and early mortality, reflecting a deep crisis of identity and purpose.
Through meticulous research and compassionate storytelling, Dr. Brown argues that patriarchy, misogyny, and outdated modes of masculinity harm everyone—women, men, families, and the social fabric. The cultural promise of male dominance has not only limited women for centuries but has also left generations of boys and men without the emotional and developmental tools necessary to thrive in a changing world.
