The Hammond Downtown Development District (DDD) is a public agency dedicated to preserving, promoting, and strengthening Downtown Hammond.

Our vision is that Hammond is a place where preservation and progress coexist in pursuit of nurturing a thriving community. Our work is rooted in community engagement that instills local pride while supporting innovation and sustainable growth.

The DDD is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors and supported by volunteer committees focused on marketing, design, events, business development, residential initiatives, and the farmers market. Downtown Hammond was recognized as a Great American Main Street Award winner in 2022.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director serves as the primary support to the Executive Director and plays a key role in the daily operations of the organization. This position combines administrative management, event coordination, project management, communications, and community engagement.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, adaptable, and passionate about community development and downtown revitalization.

This position requires occasional evening and weekend work, including events and at least one Saturday per month.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Administrative Operations
  • Coordinate meetings, agendas, minutes, and committee logistics.

  • Assist with organizational reporting and regulatory requirements.

  • Process invoices, deposits, credit card reconciliations, and other financial tasks.

  • Maintain organizational records, databases, and office systems.

  • Provide excellent customer service to businesses, residents, partners, and visitors.

  • Assist with website updates and public records requests.

  • Serve as staff liaison for assigned committees.

  • Maintain daily office operations during business hours.

Project Management & Event Coordination
  • Assist with planning and executing downtown events and programs.

  • Coordinate vendors, sponsors, volunteers, and event logistics.

  • Monitor event budgets and expenses.

  • Support event staffing and day-of operations.

  • Assist with sponsor relationships and fulfillment.

  • Participate in event setup and breakdown, including outdoor work and light physical labor.

Communications & Marketing Support

  • Assist with social media, website content, photography, and promotional materials.

  • Support marketing campaigns and organizational communications.

  • Help create content that promotes downtown businesses, events, and initiatives.

Qualifications

Required Education
  • Bachelor’s degree.

Required Experience
  • Minimum one year of administrative or office management experience.

  • Minimum one year of project management or event planning experience.

  • Minimum one year of communications, marketing, or promotional experience.

Preferred Skills
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Google Workspace

  • Canva

  • Mailchimp or similar email marketing platforms

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday during regular office hours.

  • Occasional evenings for meetings and events.

  • At least one Saturday per month for events and farmers market support.

  • Additional weekend hours may be required for special events.
